The Economics and Sociology of Management Consulting

The Economics and Sociology of Management Consulting
By:"Thomas Armbrüster"
Published on 2006-11-16 by Cambridge University Press

Management consultancy is a key sector in the economic change toward a service and knowledge economy. Originally published in 2006, this book explains the mechanisms of the management consulting market and the management of consulting firms from both economic and sociological perspectives. It also examines the strategies, marketing approaches, knowledge management and human resource management techniques of consulting firms. After outlining the relationships between transaction cost economics, signaling theory, embeddedness theory and sociological neoinstitutionalism, Thomas Armbrüster applies these theories to central questions such as: Why does the consulting sector exist and grow? Which institutions connect supply and demand? And which factors influence the relationship between clients and consultants? By applying both economic and sociological approaches, the book explains the general economic changes of the previous thirty years and sharpens the relationship between the academic disciplines.

The Rhetoric of Economics

The Rhetoric of Economics
By:"Deirdre N. McCloskey"
Published on 1998-05-15 by Univ of Wisconsin Press

A classic in its field, this pathbreaking book humanized the scientific rhetoric of economics to reveal its literary soul. Economics needs to admit that it, like other sciences, works with metaphors and stories. Its most mathematical and statistical moments are properly dominated by comparison and narration, that is to say, human persuasion. The book was McCloskey's opening move in the development of a \

The Economics of Trade Protection

The Economics of Trade Protection
By:"Neil Vousden"
Published on 1990-08-31 by Cambridge University Press

Over the past two decades there has been a gradual but fundamental change in the nature of trade protection. Even as international negotiation has succeeded in reducing tariffs to low levels, national governments have resorted to a range of increasingly intricate policies to protect their domestic industries from foreign competition. Direct quantitative restrictions on international trade have become particularly widespread. Such nontariff barriers often have very different effects from tariffs and require careful analysis in their own right. This book presents a systematic overview of the modern theory of trade protection. The material in the book divides naturally into four sections. The first section covers trade restrictions in competitive markets, the second trade restrictions and imperfect competition, the third the political economy of trade protection, and the fourth the theory of policy reform. The presentation makes extensive use of diagrams, with the more difficult mathematics included in six appendixes.

Transport Economics

Transport Economics
By:"K. Button"
Published on 2010-01-01 by Edward Elgar Publishing

'In the 3rd edition of Transport Economics Button draws together the burgeoning literature in transportation economics. It is a comprehensive standalone text covering all aspects of the field including new sections on logistics and congestion pricing. It should be required reading for every student of transportation and on the library shelf of all transportation researchers and practitioners, an excellent book.' David Gillen, University of British Columbia, Canada Acclaim for the second edition: 'To the literature in the field of transport economics, this is a most welcome addition. Primarily a textbook on theory, it also contains many references to applied studies. . . The book is written in a lucid style and consequently is easy to read and understand.' J.P. Hanlon, Transport 'It is admirably structured, with an introductory chapter placing transport in its economic context and relating transport and location economics.' Urban Studies 'This book is written in a clear, easy to understand style. It is essential reading for those studying for the Institute's Transport Economics examination as well as for undergraduate and postgraduate students of the subject. . . The book offers good value for money and is strongly recommended to anyone with an interest in transport economics.' M.R. Cairns, Transport ' . . . this book does read very much like a textbook; it explains economic concepts clearly, often in both words and mathematical equations, and identifies their relevance in the transport field. . . Transport Economics does provide a good basis with which to understand most of the issues behind what is one of the fastest moving areas of environmental activity in an area where most books will be out of date almost as soon as they are written anyway.' Marcus Enoch, Environmental Politics Transport Economics is a thoroughly revised edition of a well-established textbook which applies economic analysis to transport issues. Each chapter has been carefully reworked and includes new material dealing with the regulation of transport markets. The theoretical content is supported with considerable empirical evidence drawn from a wide range of international sources. Although aimed primarily at university students, this volume is accessible to non-specialists who have an interest in transport economics. It has no modal bias but rather examines in general terms the many aspects of the demand for, and supply of, transport together with the various methods of government intervention needed to ensure that social and environmental criteria are attained. This successful and widely adopted textbook has been meticulously revised and updated for the third edition. As the best intermediate text currently available, it will be welcomed by students, policymakers and all those concerned with the supply of transport services.

Economics, Values, and Organization

Economics, Values, and Organization
By:"Avner Ben-Ner","Louis Putterman"
Published on 1999 by Cambridge University Press

In this path-breaking book, economists and scholars from diverse disciplines use standard economic tools to investigate the formation and evolution of normative preferences. The fundamental premise is that an adequate understanding of how an economy and society are organized and function cannot be reached without an understanding of the formation and mutation of values and preferences that determine how we interact with others. Its chapters explore the two-way interaction between economic arrangements or institutions, and preferences, including those regarding social status, the well-being of others, and ethical principles. Contributions have been written especially for this volume and are designed to address a wide readership in economics and other disciplines. The contributors are leading scholars who draw on such fields as game theory, economic history, the economics of institutions, and experimental economics, as well as political philosophy, sociology and psychology, to establish and explore their arguments.

The Economics of Antitrust Injury and Firm-specific Damages

The Economics of Antitrust Injury and Firm-specific Damages
By:"Kevin Scott Marshall","Stephen H. Kalos"
Published on 2008 by Lawyers & Judges Publishing Company

The focus of this text is to teach and illustrate the fundamentals of microeconomics as it relates to the administration and enforcement of antitrust laws both domestically and internationally. The chapters instruct as to the fundamentaleconomic constructs relevant to the analysis of antitrust injury, as well as address both legal and economic issues with respect to the measurement of antitrust damages. Each chapter provides the student, practitioner, consultant and/or judicial officer critical insight with respect to the analysis and measurement of competitive injury and any resulting business damages. This book is designed to serve as 1) a companion text in any antitrust law class; 2) a supplemental text in any managerial economics class; and 3) a resource to practitioners and consultants in the field of antitrust and industrial organization. The study of antitrust law is an interdisciplinary endeavor. While the traditional case method approach provides a solid introductory foundation, such an approach, absent any applied economic theory, will likely result in a stale, task-oriented classroom and/or jurisprudential environment, primarily devoted to categorizing an evolving common law history. Given the arbitrarily imposed time constraints imposed by an institutional semester or an administrative judge, one cannot expect to teach or learn all the intricacies of microeconomics, but since an understanding of microeconomics fundamentals will result from an understanding of the underlying assumptions of the model of perfect competition, one can expect to achieve a certain level of competence in their application. Each of the contributing authors is recognized for his or her scholarship and expertise in the antitrust regulatory field. The totality of their varied backgrounds and experiences not only illustrates the robust nature of the book's contents, but also illustrates the profound interdisciplinary nature of regulating competition in the markets of the world.

Handbook on the Economics of Sport

Handbook on the Economics of Sport
By:"Wladimir Andreff","Stefan Szymanski"
Published on 2006 by Edward Elgar Publishing

The editors should be commended for taking on such a big task, and succeeding so well. This book should be in the library of every institution where students have to write a paper that may be related to sport, or on the shelf of any lecturer teaching economics or public finance who has even a remote interest in sport. The material is very accessible, and useful in many different settings. Ruud H. Koning, Jahrbücher f. Nationalökonomie u. Statistik Edward Elgar s brilliant market niche is identifying a topic in economics, finding editors who know the area backwards and challenging them to assemble the best cross-section of relevant articles either already published or newly commissioned. Handbook on the Economics of Sport is Edward Elgar at its very best. If you love economics you ll find many fascinating insights here; if you love sport but know little economics then this book is mostly accessible and will teach you a lot; and if you are a sports-mad economist then you will be in hog heaven. Furthermore, if, like this reviewer, you are broadly very sceptical about the reports consultants produce for governments on the supposed economic windfall from hosting a big event or subsidising a stadium then you will get a lot of good counter-arguments in this volume. Indeed there are several chapters on the above theme that I m sure I ll be copying frequently to government officials in years to come. . . The demand for sport is a fascinating subject and it is hard to pick out just one chapter from the second section. Read them all they make a wonderful 65-page treat. . . Part VI was a real feast, a smorgasbord. . . This is a magnificent piece of work and the 36-page index rounds it all off splendidly. John Blundell, Economic Affairs The book covers the most important areas of research of an emerging economic sub-discipline spanning the past half a century. It serves admirably the purpose of an introduction into the rich and growing area of reflection for all concerned. . . the editors and authors of the Handbook have done a commendable job of accumulating sophisticated material for many economists, managers, politicians and self-conscious fans, who are sure to find excellent training ground for the whole heptathlon. . . This book will be invaluable for advanced students investigating professional sport. From the point of view of lawyers, particularly those engaged with the relationship between law and sports governance, the Handbook offers invaluable analysis of the economic issues that are alluded to in those debates but rarely examined in detail. . . These insights will also prove useful for policy analysts and sports administrators for whom many sections should be considered mandatory reading. Aleksander Sulejewicz, Journal of Contemporary European Research Over 800 pages on the economics of sport. What a feast! What a treat! The editors have done a wonderful job both in terms of breadth from David Beckham to child labour in Pakistan and depth, tournaments and luxury taxes for example. . . The 86 chapters are uniformly of a very high standard and illuminating. And there are real gems in some of the contributions. British Journal on the Economics of Sport This very interesting and comprehensive book achieves its objective, namely to present an overview of research in sports economics at an introductory level. . . [The editors] have produced an excellent reference book that belongs in all academic institutions libraries. It provides extensive introduction to the growing body of literature in the rising field of economics of sport. The book s relevant monographs should be read by institutions, cities and countries prior to their committing major resources towards sports facilities or a sporting event. James Angresano, Journal of Sports Economics One could think of this book as the sports-and-economics counterpart to Joy of Cooking, because it will satisfy the needs of those with a keen interest in such subjects as the
